Collaborate review Question 1 of Kronos/Laurie Anderson

Put your answers as replies to this post.

What exactly was this piece?  Does it defy categorization entirely?

  1. “Landfall” must be categorized as a piece of performance art and Anderson as a performance artist. However, ‘performance art’ is too vague a term to encapsulate the piece, which took full advantage of the Bing Concert Hall’s multicolored lighting, vast curved surfaces, and state-of-the-art acoustics. Words, which were written in different fonts and devolved slowly into mere representations of words, were projected upon two of the curved walls, scrolling and flashing to the beat of the music. Anderson read poems she had written as well, adding literary art into the mix. Despite the accouterment, however, “Landfall” is primarily a piece of music.

  2. This was a beautiful piece of music, covered by an overambitious piece of performance art, decorated with, frankly, failed pieces of poetry. The key to its appreciation is to resist judging its interior by what's covering it.

  4. "Landfall" should have just been a fantastic and moving quartet piece complemented by an experimental musician. It ended up being almost that, if not for the disconnected meditations on language and meaning supplanting the musical cohesion.
